Legend places the origins of taralli in a period of famine in 15th century Puglia, when a mother trying to feed her family used the basic ingredients available to poor families—flour, extra virgin olive oil, salt and white wine—to create dough, shape it into small rings and bake them. The epitome of cucina povera, this immensely popular snack, which tastes like a mix between a pretzel and a breadstick, is still made with the same ingredients even today, double-cooked for extra crunch. In southern Italy, taralli are a classic pairing alongside an aperitif and add great texture to an antipasti platter. Naturally they’re also a perfect lunchbox treat!
